With the events that transpired Thursday I though it would be interesting to address the reality of the situation. If you do not know a bomb threat had forced the Wellington railway station to close down for approximately an hour and a half. Although this turned out to be fake, it has further set in the public mind that New Zealand is not the safe heaven that I personally though it to be. However, it is important to remember that New Zealand is all that bad.

ReplyDeleteBomb threats are surprisingly common place in Wellington. The day before the Wellington Railway Station received a threat, the WINZ on Adelaide road also received one resulting in the closure of the street for a period. Disruptive techniques such as this are utilized all over the world for the purpose of political influence, however many of the threats made in Wellington are from repeat offenders (often mentally ill). While I understand why this may make one feel less safe, it has become somewhat of a trend for disgruntled and misguided individuals to make threats against WINZ offices following the Ashburton Work and Income shooting in 2016.
ReplyDeleteAs the threats in Wellington are so regular, we have to consider whete the systems in place to deter individuals from making such threats or working effectively, perhaps more severe sentences should be put in place for such threats..
