Tunisian president Kais Saied wins second term with more than 90% of the vote with a turn out of 27.7%. Facing only two rivals, the closet challenger Ayachi Zammel won a mere 7% of the vote despite being sentenced to 12 years in prison just days before the result. This drastic decline in democracy is interesting as Tunisia is where the wave of pro-democracy protests of the Arab Spring begun. Despite being one of the successes of the movement, following election in 2019 Saied swiftly began disassembling democracy in Tunisia. It will be interesting to see how the election plays out given its fraudulent nature.
