Democratic Backsliding

The article "Democracy vs. Autocracy: West, China, and Many in the Middle" from Project Syndicate discusses the emerging global tension between democratic and autocratic governance models, focusing particularly on the role of the West and China. The article has several key arguments and points which I will summarize. The world is witnessing an increasing divide between democratic and autocratic regimes. While the West, led by the US and Europe, continues to advocate for liberal democracy, China and other autocratic regimes have become more assertive in promoting their own models of governance, often focusing on efficiency and stability. China's model of autocratic governance, coupled with its economic success, has garnered appeal among countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This has led to an ideological competition with the West, where China presents its governance model as an alternative that prioritizes economic development and political stability over individual freedoms and democratic processes. Many nations, particularly in the Global South, find themselves navigating a middle path, neither fully endorsing Western style democracy nor entirely embracing autocracy. These countries are balancing their foreign policies and domestic governance strategies to benefit from relationships with both democratic and autocratic powers. The COVID-19 pandemic and other global challenges like climate change have amplified debates about governance efficiency. Autocratic regimes often claim to handle crises more decisively, while democracies emphasize transparency and public accountability, but often struggle with polarization and slower decision-making processes.

Western Response: The West is facing its own internal challenges, with rising populism, declining trust in democratic institutions, and increasing political polarization. These issues weaken the West's ability to effectively counter the autocratic narrative presented by countries like China. These issues were seen even in the New Zealand elections where populist minority party leaders had substantial boosts in votes, additionally declining trust especially in the media was seen.
