It seems that the military faction opposed to Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana has finally succeeded in seizing control of the African island. In a televised statement, a colonel announced that a 'military council' had been set up to "restore order after the sins of the previous regime" and restore democracy.
This comes after several months of sporadic violence and unrest in the state; and appears to be a 'changing of the guard' amongst the elite coalition of key supporters.
The announcement came while the President was out of the country, suggesting that the opposition faction siezed the opportunity to launch a coup de ta when the incumbent was 'napping'.
