In summary the delightful Mr Berslusconi has moved all of the centre right parties Italy, into one party. And is now saying he should have more power. Nice. Read the articles though.

ReplyDeleteThis is interesting, but hardly evidence of a 'New Fascism'. It is perfectly legal and acceptable for two parties to join together to form one party. If two ruling leftist parties joined together, would it be New Communism? Increasing the power of his party is not indicative of being a Fascist.
ReplyDeleteMinority and coalition governments are notoriously week, especially so in Italy, which had 53 governments in it's first 48 years of democracy post the Second World War. It seems like a rather sensible thing for Mr Berlusconi to have done, I believe. All it does is to stabilise the government, which the people have democratically given the mandate, to govern.
Also, the article does state that the Northern League (Lega Nord), which some might argue is the most right-wing of the 3 parties, has decided to stay out of this arrangement. So, not all the rightest parties are uniting, just some of them.
Perhaps it would be possible to say that this is just one step of many that Berlusconi has taken down the path towards Fascism, but that would be debatable, and keep in mind he is still very far away from getting there.
