After spending 4 consecutive terms as President of Russia, Vladimir Putin had to step down and give the position to his protege, Dmitry Medvedev. If he let things run their natural course, Putin would be able to legally run for President again in 2012. Like a child waiting for christmas, 2012 is too far away for Putin. Unlike a child at christmas, there is speculation that he's going to do something about it. Putin is trying to make it so that he can call an early election, and have Medvedev's depature unchallenged, in a move that "would effectively rid Russia of its last democratic vestiges". His proposal is expected to be approved in a few weeks, and critics of the Kremlin have stated that the "move completed Mr Putin's ambitions to exert total control over the judicial, executive and legislative branches of government, as well as the television media."

Cally, it's only two consecutive terms that he was president, though he is now prime minister and most people think he still basically runs the country.

ReplyDeleteSince the election of Medvedev as president and Putin as Prime minister, every country knew that Medvedev's was a simple puppet and Putin will run the country. This is not the first time that something like this happen in Russia. In revolutionnary Russia, when the intellectuals like Trostky where thinking about the future of the revolution. Stalin was organizing the country and that was the reason he became so powerful.
