A large crowd numbering in the thousands gathered outside Tbilisi Police Headquarters, demanding the release of several political prisoners. The demonstrations soon became violent, with police using a degree of force to repell protestors from the area. The riot comes after opposition towards President Saakashvili 's rule continues to increase, with numerous outspoken opposition political figures involved in the latest demonstrations.
Saakashvili has become increasingly unpopular after the highly controvercial border conflict with Russia attracted global interest, with the Georgian leader being held responsible by many citizens for the loss of territory (North Ossetia) and damage to buildings.
The smouldering tension has not diminished over the last few months, and it will be interesting to keep an eye on events as they unfold.
