This article discusses the delineation between authoritarianism and totalitarianism in the context of Russia and the changes that have been implemented during the war with Ukraine. In particular discussing the show trials and long, harsh prison sentences and exiles - not just for political oppositions as was under the authoritarian regimes, but also ordinary Russian citizens who have spoken out against the war in something as simple as a small social media post. Whilst arguable this has not completely created an 'idealogical enemy' it does seem like a far less rational use of state repression. Another aspect is the militarisation of schools, the independence of media being undermined (more than usual), internet access curtailed - all falling into the politicisation of the person sphere and requiring positive political participation for fear of the consequences otherwise.
my question is whether without a clear singular overarching ideological project - can we consider modern Russia totalitarian?
