The lectures have been incredibly informative in contrasting democracies with non-democracies, looking at the fundamental differences in governance, citizen engagement, and societal outcomes. It has prompted me to take a deeper look to understand how democratic systems better promote transparency, accountability, and individual freedoms, whereas authoritarian regimes often rely on coercion, censorship, and centralised power. It’s also made me curious about the psychology behind authoritarianism, considering why certain individuals and groups gravitate towards such regimes, and the effects it has on a society. Especially when we look at the upcoming elections in the US, the recent elections in France, and the resurgence in more authoritarian-inclined parties gaining support throughout the West in recent years.
