Check the link in the title. Essentially an article from Stuff.co.nz explaining how most New Zealanders do not want tax cuts if it means the government has to borrow more. Interesting as this relates to arguments about how well suited the "people" are to voting. If they are prepared to sacrifice tax cuts for the good of the country that would imply that people are rather well suited to democracy.
However polls are always dodgy as this clip demonstrates...

ReplyDeleteYou weren't actually meant to follow the link...Just rely on my ever so accurate summary and the rather spiffing video. Personal research of the facts is not allowed. The facts are as I say them. Should you disagree with these facts you would be disagreeing with the ruler of this thread, and as such disagreeing with your country. Do you disagree with your country? Are you a traitor?

Uh huh. My point was that people are not necessarily upset with the current round of tax cuts, but perhaps future tax cuts are not wise.
ReplyDeleteOf course, people may be thinking that in the next couple of years the economic outlook may improve, negating the need for tax cuts.
Right but the survey (well the articles summary of the survey) says that "The New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development survey found that while most people wanted tax cuts planned for 2010 and 2011, they did not want them if it meant further borrowing.".
ReplyDeleteThe round of cuts planned for 2010 and 2011 is the current round of tax cuts....
But I do get your point, and this does interestingly point back to my original post on People actually caring about the country.
To an extent, people are willing to accept tax cut (or in Pols 209 Speak: direct payments to supporters). But once they have information to suggest that the country will be harmed by further tax cuts many people will loose faith in the government as they would see the government as more interested in being in power then looking after the country.
And a new thought just popped into my head. Which I will post as a main post now.
Aren't the tax cuts that started April 1 the current round of tax cuts?
