This article in the Economist touches on the discussions in class last week and today around whether democracy truly is the 'better' regime. The author touches on the struggles democracies are facing in recent times with issues such as corruption, inequality, and declining public trust. This is in contrast with countries like China, where massive economic growth has been achieved under authoritarian rule, challenging the idea that democracies are always more prosperous. This article does take the point of view however that democracy has an inherent value and what relies on and rights it fundamentally protects such as accountability and freedom remain important, even in the face of economic success of non-democratic regimes.
