This week we were looking at Democracy vs Non-democracy when it came to development, good governance and economic progress. When researching I came across this article which was interesting. The article "Democracy Alone is No Guarantee of Development" presents several key arguments. Firstly, it emphasizes that while democracy is often viewed as a route to economic growth, it does not inherently lead to development. Africa, despite embracing democracy after 1989, remains plagued by issues such as high public debt, corruption, and poverty, indicating that democracy alone is insufficient. 

The article argues that good governance including rule of law, accountability, and anti-corruption measures is essential for development, regardless of whether a state is democratic or authoritarian. Some authoritarian regimes, like Libya and Equatorial Guinea, have achieved higher levels of development, showing that regime type is not the sole factor. 

Additionally, the article highlights the issue of political instability in Africa, with frequent coups undermining both democracy and economic progress. This instability is often tied to poor governance and economic mismanagement, worsened by challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The piece ultimately suggests that effective leadership and strong institutions are more important than democracy alone in fostering sustainable development.
