I found this week's topic on how non-democratic rulers prevent coups. mostly the conflict between having a highly trained military and those that are less competent but more loyal. I did a quick google and most of the articles that popped up mentioned the concept of counter balancing. This approach focuses on countering the governments military with groups such as "republican guards, militarised police and other paramilitary forces." Despite the prevalence of counterbalancing, there is little known about whether or how it works. One question this centres around is why would a small group of presidential guards be able to prevent a larger and better trained army from seizing power? While there is a lot of writing focusing on describing coups, there is far less that focuses on how they are prevented.
Interestingly the short excerpt of the book stated that coups are more likely to be successful against democratic regimes than authoritarian ones.
