Week 7 Blog contribution
This week, I was interested in learning more about monarchies. I stumbled upon an essay from Cambridge university titled “Why monarchy should be abolished.” It discusses breaches in morals that undermine representative democracy through things such as equality, using examples such as monarchs being treated as ‘supererior’, which in turn affects human dignity as in our current age, there are more resources and educated individuals, so there is really no need for them, as democracy is seen as the better option. Explaining how this symbolic role monarchies play is part of the past. Still, it is no longer needed and, therefore, should be abolished.
It was a fascinating read, a bit biased, but a promising thought process and strong argument.
What I find interesting about this essay is that there seems to be a lot of ‘this should be done’ and ‘monarchies need to go.’ however, there are no solutions as to how this can be accomplished, and it reads to me personally as one big rant.

What I find interesting in relation to monarchies, and seen in this mornings lecture, was how tied they are to the culture of the country. In Saudi Arabia, there are cultural and religious ties to the ruling family that mean that them not having them seems unfathomable. Compare this to the UK where many can imagine a system without the monarchy. However the main defense of the monarchy is the stability they provide with there presence. A very interesting conversation!
