The Democratic National Convention held recently, I am left with a question: what is the point of this? While you can comb through any number of news articles to see this ridiculous spectacle, I recommend getting a laugh while you're at it with this clip from the Daily Show. But even Jon Stewart is eating this steaming slop straight from the trough - and loving every munch!
Democrats spent 4 days in a massive arena singing and dancing in an event that cost millions with its supposed purpose being a mere formality. Is this even remotely necessary? The answer is no but why do they do it? Is it to show off the party wealth? The thinking being that displays of success encourage some kind of (further) political investment. Maybe, Kamala Harris' campaign reported receiving $82 million in donations over the 4 days. But it seems inappropriate considering the economic strife most people face.
It creates celebrity status for politicians, placing a politician's persona over their policy inviting authoritarian figures with egos that just cannot be satisfied. Likeable celebrities with swooning, adoring fans are surely more likely to be elected. But if celebrity is the motivation for such spectacles, what kind of person is truly being elected? An image obsessed celeb set to be on the cover of next weeks gossip mag "10 sexiest people with access to a predator drone."
This whole thing is a performance, a dance with lots of bright and pretty colours that exist to woo potential 'mates.' My favourite mating dance is that of the Ostrich, not the DNC.
God questions Louis - but there may be other reasons for it! E.g., energizing the party faithful to turn out the vote, dramatize party elite unity, prevent legal challenges, etc. Are there alternatives that accomplish similar goals?
