'Fifty years after the Uruguay coup why so few people have been Brough to justice for dictatorship crimes' is an article published on June 27 2023 by 'The Conversation'. Although this article was published over a year ago it holds relevance to today and trying to understand why so few people are brought to justice for the dictatorship crimes that they faced as individuals and communities. The article notes that in Uruguay the Supreme Court has severely downplayed the level of harm demonstrated under the dictatorship. Thus, when the Supreme Court is not willing to acknowledge the harm faced it is difficult for individuals to be brought to justice.
Another way to look at justice in a post dictatorship world is through acknowledging that the country is in a fragile state and it is particularly difficult for the courts to bring people to justice if the courts themselves do not have the resources or man power. Thus, as important as it is to bring people to justice it can be difficult to do so in practice when the country is in a vulnerable state and has limited resources.
