Democratic Military Coup’s and the influence of the international community:
Encouragement of employing democratic systems of governance is common within the international community. With many political heavy weights like the USA offering benefits for building and retaining a democratic system. As well as this, international organisations like the European Union and World Bank and promote democracy through participation and support restrictions. This is potentially a significant push factor during democratic miltiary coups. Majority of democratic military coup’s are temporary (to some extent), where they take control as a means of establishing a more permanent government to replace their military rule, as soon as practical.
When viewing this temporary nature in light of the common causes of a democratic military coup, including underdevelopment, economic crisis, and social conflict, it makes sense that the military would want to change a constitution to reflect democratic principles, and establish a supported and stable democratic government, to gain access to international benefits of democracy. The US will predominantly only provide financial assistance to nations with democratic governance, as established in federal law. The EU takes a similar position. The World bank is also conservative about the financial assistance and resources it provides t non-democratic nations. Therefore, considering the causes of the coup, it would be of the upmost importance to the military to establish a democratic government, in order to begin receiving some of these benefits and international support, as a means of resolving the immediate economic and social causes of the coup.
