Research Question: Is there a distinction among democratic and non-democratic regimes regarding their propensity to engage in armed conflict?
This regime classification questionnaire aims not just to determine where on a scale of democracy a regime sits, but also what form this regime takes - party, monarchy, or military. The reason for this is to show the diversity of regimes even within the spectrum from democracy to totalitarianism.
Preliminary questions (distinct state types):
Military rule
Did the transfer of power occur following a military intervention? (Y/N)
Does the regime continue following the resolution of the immediate conflict that brought them to power? (Y/N)
Has the party ceased to be purely Military? (Y/N)
Monarchy/Dynastic Rule
Do rulers justify their position based on divine right or equivalent religious justification? (Y/N)
Does the ruler have life tenure? (Y/N)
Party Rule
Is there at least one party contesting elections? (Y/N)
General Questions
Scale:
5 point scale
How much freedom of personal ideology is there?
To what extent are rights constitutionally guaranteed and upheld?
To what extent did the transfer of power occur in line with constitutional norms?
Are there free and fair elections, where either all or the vast majority of the population is able to vote?
To what extent is the leader limited by other institutions?
To what extent is the media free and independent?
How free are opposition parties to organise themselves and participate in elections?
How free is the population in relation to the use of coercive tactics by the ruling regime?
How free is the ruling elite from patronage relationships and cronyism?
How free is the regime from corruption, including corruption being used as a way of keeping members of the elite loyal to the leader?
Score rankings:
35-50- democracy
25-34- competitive authoritarian
15-24- authoritarian
0-14- totalitarian
